Where to Put Security Cameras on a Tucson Home (and Where Not To)

Camera systems fail in Tucson for predictable reasons, and almost none of them are the camera. Here is what actually goes wrong, in the order we encounter it.

1. Someone aimed a camera into the western sun

This is the most common defect we are called out to fix, and it is entirely avoidable. A camera pointed west records a white smear every afternoon during exactly the hours you most want footage. The sensor cannot recover from that much direct light no matter what the marketing says about dynamic range.

The fix is planning around the sun's path through the day, not around where the mounting is convenient. Sometimes that means moving a camera fifteen feet. Sometimes it means accepting a different angle on the same area. It always means someone thought about it before drilling.

2. The housing was not rated for a Tucson roofline

Surface temperatures on a south- or west-facing wall in July are far above ambient, and consumer cameras sold for mild climates simply cook. We specify outdoor-rated hardware and, where we can, mount it out of all-day direct sun — under an eave rather than on open stucco.

This is the single biggest difference between a camera system that is still working in year five and one that is not.

3. The cable entry was not sealed before monsoon

Monsoon finds every unsealed penetration, and water tracking down a cable into a wall is a much more expensive problem than the camera it kills. Cable entries need to be sealed and, ideally, oriented so water has nowhere to run. This costs about ten minutes per camera at install time and saves a wall repair later.

4. The coverage plan covered the wrong things

A camera watching a driveway beautifully while missing the gate is not security, it is decoration. Before anything is mounted, the question is what you are actually trying to see: who approaches the front door, who comes through the side gate, what happens at the vehicle, whether a package was taken.

In our experience, most single-family Tucson homes are properly covered by fewer cameras than owners expect — front entry, driveway or gate, rear yard access, and any side yard that is not overlooked. Four well-placed cameras beat eight badly placed ones, and cost less.

Larger lots on the southeast side — Vail, Rita Ranch, Corona de Tucson — change the calculation. Longer driveways, detached outbuildings and more distance between structures mean coverage and network planning have to extend beyond the house itself.

5. Nobody thought about how you would find the footage

Recording is not the same as being able to retrieve. If your system stores thirty days but you cannot search it by time and camera without a manual, you will not use it on the day you need it. Configuration and retention planning are part of the job, not an afterthought.

What we do differently

We install cameras the way people who have to come back and service them install cameras — because we do come back and service them. Our in-house service department has its own service manager, and our Google reviews name technicians who returned the next morning to adjust an angle or painted a sensor to match a new door.

We also integrate cameras into your automation platform where you want that. On a Control4, Crestron Home or Savant system, the cameras appear on the same touchscreens and phone app as your lighting and alarm, rather than living in a separate app you forget you have.

One note on HOAs

Several communities we work in — parts of Oro Valley, SaddleBrooke, Dove Mountain — have architectural guidelines covering exterior equipment. Raise it at the consultation. We would much rather design placement that meets the rules the first time than relocate cameras after a letter arrives.
